Bible verses for protection
Psalm 91 is the protection psalm — he who dwells in the secret place of the Most High will rest under the shadow of the Almighty. Psalm 121:7-8 is the travelling one: he will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward and forever. Both are below in full, along with the harder question of what these verses mean when someone you prayed for was not kept safe.

He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust.” For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler, and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his feathers. Under his wings you will take refuge. His faithfulness is your shield and rampart.Psalms 91:1-4 · World English Bible
Secret place, shadow, refuge, fortress, pinions, buckler — six images for one idea, stacked for someone too frightened to follow an argument.
King James
He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.

Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.
The honest part
Protection verses are usually read over people we're frightened for — a child driving at night, someone deployed, someone in hospital. So it's worth saying what Scripture itself does: these are real promises, and the Bible does not present them as a guarantee that nothing bad happens to faithful people. Stephen was stoned. James was executed. Paul lists shipwrecks, beatings and a night adrift at sea, and calls God faithful in the same letters.
Isaiah 54:17 — no weapon formed against you will prevail — is the verse most often stretched into a promise of a trouble-free life. In context it's addressed to a restored Jerusalem about her ultimate vindication. It is a real and enormous promise about the final outcome. It has never meant that Christians don't get ill.
What the psalms actually offer is refuge — a place to be, in the middle of danger rather than instead of it. Proverbs 18:10 puts it best: the name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous runs into it and is safe. You still have to be running from something.
For praying over someone who's away
Psalm 121 is traditionally a song for the road — sung by pilgrims walking to Jerusalem. If you're looking for something to pray over someone leaving the house, that's the one with the longest history of being used for exactly that.
What this looks like on a phone
Push From God sends one of these when it fits what you've told it about your week — not on a schedule you have to keep up with.
For the one still not home
The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.
Psalm 121:7-8
You mentioned the late drive. Pilgrims sang this one on the road for the same reason.
