Push From God

Bible readings for Christmas

The nativity you can picture — shepherds and wise men around a manger — is two separate accounts laid over each other. Luke has the census, the feeding trough and the shepherds. Matthew has the star, Herod and the magi, and puts them in a house. Below are fourteen passages quoted in full in both translations, with how long each takes to read aloud and a note on which service it suits.

14 passages · World English Bible & King James · public domain

Choosing for the service you are actually running

Christmas readings are longer than any other occasion on this site. A wedding reading runs twenty seconds; Luke 2:1-7 runs nearly a minute and Matthew 2:1-12 the better part of two. That is worth knowing before you hand one to a nervous eleven-year-old.

  • Nine lessons and carols works backwards from the promise to the fulfilment. The prophecies — Isaiah, Micah — come early; Luke 2 and John 1 come last.
  • A short family service wants Luke 2:1-7 and 2:8-14 and very little else. Between them they are under two minutes and contain the whole story most people came for.
  • Midnight or a said service is where John 1:1-5 and 1:14 belong. They are the strangest and least sentimental readings here, and they land differently at midnight than at eleven in the morning with children present.
  • Give the long ones to confident readers. Luke 1:26-38 and Matthew 2:1-12 are both around 108 seconds and both contain proper nouns that catch people out.

Everything quoted here is public domain — the World English Bible and the King James — so you can print any of it in an order of service or a carol sheet without a licence, a fee, or a permissions email.

  1. Now in those days, a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be enrolled. This was the first enrolment made when Quirinius was governor of Syria. All went to enrol themselves, everyone to his own city. Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to David’s city, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, to enrol himself with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him as wife, being pregnant. While they were there, the day had come for her to give birth. She gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him in bands of cloth and laid him in a feeding trough, because there was no room for them in the inn.Luke 2:1-7 · World English Bible

The birth itself. Fifty-three seconds, and the passage most services build around. Note the World English Bible says feeding trough where the King James says manger — same object, and the plainer word tends to land harder read aloud.

    King James

And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

  2. There were shepherds in the same country staying in the field, and keeping watch by night over their flock. Behold, an angel of the Lord stood by them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. The angel said to them, “Don’t be afraid, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be to all the people. For there is born to you today, in David’s city, a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord. This is the sign to you: you will find a baby wrapped in strips of cloth, lying in a feeding trough.” Suddenly, there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly army praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, on earth peace, good will towards men.”Luke 2:8-14 · World English Bible

The shepherds and the angels. Fifty-three seconds. “Do not be afraid” is said to working men on a night shift, which is worth remembering before it becomes a greetings-card line. Related verses →

    King James

And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

  3. When the angels went away from them into the sky, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem, now, and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.” They came with haste and found both Mary and Joseph, and the baby was lying in the feeding trough. When they saw it, they publicised widely the saying which was spoken to them about this child. All who heard it wondered at the things which were spoken to them by the shepherds. But Mary kept all these sayings, pondering them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, just as it was told them.Luke 2:15-20 · World English Bible

What the shepherds did next, and the quietest verse in the whole story: Mary kept all these sayings and pondered them in her heart. Forty-nine seconds.

    King James

And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds. But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

  4. For a child is born to us. A son is given to us; and the government will be on his shoulders. His name will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.Isaiah 9:6 · World English Bible

“For a child is born to us.” Fourteen seconds. The most-quoted Christmas prophecy, and short enough for a child to read from memory. Related verses →

    King James

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

  5. Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin will conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.Isaiah 7:14 · World English Bible

The Immanuel sign. Ten seconds — the shortest reading here. Matthew quotes it directly at 1:23, which is why it sits in almost every carol service.

    King James

Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

  6. But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, being small amongst the clans of Judah, out of you one will come out to me who is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings out are from of old, from ancient times.Micah 5:2 · World English Bible

Bethlehem named centuries early. Fifteen seconds. In Matthew 2 it is the verse Herod's scribes quote back at him when he asks where to look.

    King James

But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.

  7. Now the birth of Jesus Christ was like this: After his mother, Mary, was engaged to Joseph, before they came together, she was found pregnant by the Holy Spirit. Joseph, her husband, being a righteous man, and not willing to make her a public example, intended to put her away secretly. But when he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, don’t be afraid to take to yourself Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. She shall give birth to a son. You shall name him Jesus, for it is he who shall save his people from their sins.” Now all this has happened that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and shall give birth to a son. They shall call his name Immanuel,” which is, being interpreted, “God with us.” Joseph arose from his sleep, and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took his wife to himself; and didn’t know her sexually until she had given birth to her firstborn son. He named him Jesus.Matthew 1:18-25 · World English Bible

Joseph's side of it, which almost never gets read. Eighty-three seconds. He is described as planning to end the engagement quietly, to spare her — a small mercy that the story usually skips past.

    King James

Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily. But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.

  8. Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of King Herod, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is he who is born King of the Jews? For we saw his star in the east, and have come to worship him.” When King Herod heard it, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. Gathering together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he asked them where the Christ would be born. They said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for this is written through the prophet, ‘You Bethlehem, land of Judah, are in no way least amongst the princes of Judah; for out of you shall come a governor who shall shepherd my people, Israel.’” Then Herod secretly called the wise men, and learnt from them exactly what time the star appeared. He sent them to Bethlehem, and said, “Go and search diligently for the young child. When you have found him, bring me word, so that I also may come and worship him.” They, having heard the king, went their way; and behold, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them until it came and stood over where the young child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy. They came into the house and saw the young child with Mary, his mother, and they fell down and worshipped him. Opening their treasures, they offered to him gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they went back to their own country another way.Matthew 2:1-12 · World English Bible

The magi, the star and Herod. A hundred and eight seconds, the longest here. Read it carefully: they arrive at a house, and the text never says how many there were. See below.

    King James

Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born. And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet, And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel. Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also. When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh. And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.

  9. Now in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man whose name was Joseph, of David’s house. The virgin’s name was Mary. Having come in, the angel said to her, “Rejoice, you highly favoured one! The Lord is with you. Blessed are you amongst women!” But when she saw him, she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered what kind of salutation this might be. The angel said to her, “Don’t be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God. Behold, you will conceive in your womb and give birth to a son, and shall name him ‘Jesus.’ He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever. There will be no end to his Kingdom.” Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, seeing I am a virgin?” The angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore also the holy one who is born from you will be called the Son of God. Behold, Elizabeth your relative also has conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. For nothing spoken by God is impossible.” Mary said, “Behold, the servant of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.Luke 1:26-38 · World English Bible

The annunciation. A hundred and eight seconds. Gabriel to Mary, and her answer at the end of it, which is the hinge the whole thing turns on.

    King James

And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren. For with God nothing shall be impossible. And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.

  10. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him. Without him, nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness hasn’t overcome it.John 1:1-5 · World English Bible

“In the beginning was the Word.” Twenty-six seconds. No stable, no shepherds, no baby — the same event described from an enormous distance.

    King James

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

  11. The Word became flesh and lived amongst us. We saw his glory, such glory as of the only born Son of the Father, full of grace and truth.John 1:14 · World English Bible

“The Word became flesh and lived amongst us.” Eleven seconds. Traditionally the last reading of a nine-lessons service, and it earns the position.

    King James

And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

  12. But when the fullness of the time came, God sent out his Son, born to a woman, born under the law, that he might redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as children.Galatians 4:4-5 · World English Bible

“When the fullness of the time came.” Sixteen seconds. Paul's version of Christmas, with no narrative at all — useful when you need a short reading between carols.

    King James

But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

  13. Have this in your mind, which was also in Christ Jesus, who, existing in the form of God, didn’t consider equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, yes, the death of the cross.Philippians 2:5-8 · World English Bible

The self-emptying. Twenty-six seconds. Widely thought to be an early hymn, which makes it a natural fit in a service made mostly of singing.

    King James

Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

  14. For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, instructing us to the intent that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we would live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present age; looking for the blessed hope and appearing of the glory of our great God and Saviour, Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity and purify for himself a people for his own possession, zealous for good works.Titus 2:11-14 · World English Bible

Thirty-two seconds. Sober rather than festive, and the standard choice where a service wants a reading that is about what the birth was for.

    King James

For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

There are two nativity accounts, and they do not overlap much

Matthew and Luke both describe the birth. They agree on the names, on Bethlehem, and on very little else, and almost nothing you can picture comes from only one of them.

  • Luke has the census, the journey from Nazareth, the feeding trough, no room, the shepherds and the angels. No star. No magi. No Herod.
  • Matthew has Joseph's dream, the star, Herod, the magi and the flight to Egypt. No census, no shepherds, no stable, no innkeeper.

The crib scene on the windowsill is a merge of the two, plus some ox and ass that are in neither. This is not a problem to be explained away — it is simply what the pages say, and both are quoted in full above so you can check it in about three minutes.

The magi are not at the manger

Matthew 2:11, quoted above in full:

They came into the house and saw the young child with Mary, his mother, and they fell down and worshipped him. Opening their treasures, they offered to him gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.Matthew 2:11 · World English Bible

A house, not a stable. A young child, not a newborn. And a few verses later Herod works out his timing from when the star first appeared and kills boys up to two years old — which only makes sense if the visit came well after the night the shepherds turned up.

Matthew also never says how many magi there were. Three gifts are listed. The number of men is not.

None of which need change your carol service. But if you are reading Matthew 2 and Luke 2 in the same hour, it is worth knowing they are describing two different evenings.

“No room in the inn” is probably a guest room

The Greek word in Luke 2:7 is kataluma, and a good deal of translation scholarship argues it does not mean a commercial inn. The evidence is in Luke's own usage, and you can check it without knowing any Greek. When Luke describes an actual inn, in the Good Samaritan, he uses a different word:

came to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. He set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him.Luke 10:34 · World English Bible

And the word he does use in 2:7 turns up again at the Last Supper, where every translation renders it differently:

Tell the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, “Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?”’Luke 22:11 · World English Bible

Same word, rendered guest room. On that reading there is no innkeeper and no one turned away at a door — a family house was simply full, and the couple ended up in the part of it where the animals were fed. The NIV has followed this since 2011, translating it “because there was no guest room available for them”; a fuller survey of the textual arguments is set out here.

The King James and the World English Bible both keep inn, which is why we print it that way above. We are not correcting the translation, only noting that the innkeeper who slams the door has no lines in any of them.

Questions

What are the traditional Bible readings for Christmas?

Luke 2:1-20 is the core — the census, the birth, the shepherds. Around it sit the prophecies (Isaiah 9:6, Isaiah 7:14, Micah 5:2), Matthew 1:18-25 and 2:1-12, and John 1:1-14, which traditionally closes a service of nine lessons and carols. All of them are quoted in full on this page.

What is the shortest Christmas reading?

Isaiah 7:14 at about ten seconds, then John 1:14 at eleven and Isaiah 9:6 at fourteen. Every passage on this page has its read-aloud time next to it. Luke 2:1-7, the one most services want, runs about fifty-three seconds.

Do Matthew and Luke tell the same Christmas story?

They tell two different parts of it. Luke has the census, the feeding trough and the shepherds; Matthew has the star, Herod and the magi, and places the magi's visit at a house rather than a stable. Both are quoted in full above so you can compare them directly.

Can we print these readings in a carol sheet or order of service?

Yes, with no permission needed. The World English Bible and the King James Version are both public domain, so you can reproduce them in a carol sheet, an order of service or a projection slide without a licence or a fee. Modern translations such as the NIV and ESV are copyrighted and limit how much you may reprint.
